The cane-maker's trade

In a nutshell, the job of a cane-maker consists in transforming a wooden “carrelet” into an utensil to help people move around or adorn their clothing.

To be a cabinetmaker, you need to be skilled in a number of areas, including the use of wood lathes and other woodworking equipment. You also need to be able to operate a lathe and the equipment used by the bar turner. It is also advisable to roughen, sand and refine a knob or handle like a sculptor.

Sens et Savoir-Faire dans la Fabrication des Cannes

Transforming materials that are very different from one another requires a concentration of our senses. Touch and sight are very important in creation, particularly when it comes to dressing barrels and differentiating exotic woods. When bending the wood, our sense of hearing tells us whether the
fibers are ready to be exploited. The sense of smell comes in handy for recognizing certain
materials, which also do not need to heat up during sanding and will not have the same
effluvia according to their degree of temperature.
To date, only taste has not been aroused during the manufacturing process.

Several stages are involved in the creation of a cane, and these vary greatly depending on the materials used and the final choice desired.

That’s why it’s so difficult to explain every detail, so numerous are the possibilities. From a simple wooden block, after manipulation, addition of elements and adjustment, it can become a system cane, a ceremonial cane, a dandy’s cane or anything in between.
